Connecting Energy/Work-Power To Physics
On this page we will be linking rugby to Energy/Work-Power. Every action in life requires some type of energy, whether it's thermal, kinetic, nuclear, or gravitational. It isn't hard to say that rugby is an energetic game, but how it is applied is a different story. For the last segment of this website we will be connecting Energy/Work-Power to a rugby line out.
The Lineout
In rugby, a lineout is when the ball is knocked out of bounds and is thrown back in. To catch the ball a player is lifted into the air by two other players. The average forward's weight is 90 kg and he is usually lifted roughly 1.8 meters into the air. It also only takes 1 second to get the player fully lifted in the air. We will use this data as we calculate the energy, work and power put into a lineout.
Energy: The energy the lifted player has in the lineout is 1588 J.
E = ? E = mgh
g = -9.8 m/s2 E = (90)(9.8)(1.8)
m = 90 kg E = 1588 J
h = 1.8 m
Work: It takes 2858 J of work to lift the player in the air. So it would take each player 1429 J to lift him.
W = ? W = (F)(D)
F = 1588 J W = (1588)(1.8)
D = 1.8 m W = 2858 J
Power: A lineout requires 2825 J of power.
P = ? P = W/T
T = 1s P = 2825/1
W = 2858 J P = 2825 J
